Lipinski fell during her short programme at the 1998 US Figure Skating Championships, finishing second behind Kwan. Lipinski and Kwan were big favorites to win gold.
In Nagano, Japan, Kwan won the short programme while Lipinski took second. Throughout her long programme, Lipinski landed 7 triples, including her signature triple loop-triple loop. Lipinski won the gold medal with scores of 5.8 and 5.9, becoming the youngest female Olympic gold medalist in figure skating history.
