After her father died in a farm machinery accident, she stopped going to college full time, but she continued to take classes at Marty College and Dakota State University in Watertown, as well as online courses from the University of South Dakota. Kristi Noem was first appointed to the committee of the South Dakota Farm Service Agency. In 2006, she campaigned for and was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives.
