After graduating from Hamlin High School in 1990, she was crowned South Dakota Snow Queen. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Northern State University.
After her father died in a farm machinery accident, she stopped going to college full time, but she continued to take classes at Marty College and Dakota State University in Watertown, as well as online courses from the University of South Dakota. Finally, in 2012, she received a BA in political science from South Dakota State University.
Kristi Noem was first appointed to the committee of the South Dakota Farm Service Agency. In 2006, she campaigned for and was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives.
