Kamaru Usman was born in Nigeria, to a father who served in the Nigerian Army and a mother who worked as a teacher. Kashetu and Mohammed are his two brothers, the latter of whom is also an MMA fighter. Usman’s father was the first in his family to immigrate to the United States, and he gradually brought the rest of the family here.
Kamaru’s father, Muhammed Usman, served 10 years in prison for various charges of fraud in the Seagoville Federal Correctional Institution. During this time, his mother, Afishetu, was responsible for the children, although Muhammed was planning to accompany his son to UFC 251, but the epidemic thwarted those intentions.
Usman began wrestling in his sophomore year of high school at Bowie High School in Arlington. Usman was given the moniker Marty when he initially joined the squad since his wrestling coach couldn’t pronounce his first name Kamarudeen, and he kept it throughout his amateur wrestling career.
Usman wrestled spent one year at William Penn University in Iowa, where he qualified for the NAIA national championship in year 2007. However, owing to a snowfall, he was unable to compete. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, which had earlier sought to attract him.
Usman was a 2-time national finalist and placed in the top three in the country each of his three years at UNK. He won the NCAA Division II national title at 174 pounds in 2010, with a 44/1 record and 30 victories in a row. Usman was derailed by injuries after making the US University World Team in 2010, and after failing to qualify for the 2012 US Olympic Team Trials, he abandoned his Olympic dreams and resorted to mixed martial arts instead.
He was also given the prize for Best Performance of the Night. Usman’s winning run remained unbroken. He has a 9-fight winning streak in the UFC before facing Tyron Woodley for the welterweight championship. Usman won the title after defeating Woodley. His victory over Woodley was historic, since it made him Africa’s first UFC champion.
He then defeated Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal in a successful defense. Usman successfully defended his championship for the third bout, defeating Gilbert Burns in the third round via technical knockout. He broke Georges St record Pierre’s of 13 consecutive victories set by the former UFC Welterweight Champion.
Usman has an overall record of 18/1/0, but he is a perfect 13/0/0 in the UFC. Jose Caceres, the elder brother of former UFC featherweight Alex Caceres, gave Kamaru Usman his sole loss in his second MMA bout as a professional.
