Josephine Victoria was born on the 7th of October 1942 in Brooklyn, New York and was raised by working-class parents in a Roman Catholic, Italian household. After graduating from university, Joy enrolled at Queens College in New York City. She graduated from Stony Brook University in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in English education.
For the next five years, Joy combined her work as a high school English teacher with acting classes she took on the side. Joy subsequently turned her attention to the entertainment industry in the 1980s. As a Good Morning America producer, she transitioned into stand-up comedy.
In the 1980s, she appeared on television shows including Baby Boom and Live From Queens, after her appearances on these shows. At some point in her career, she had her own chat show called Way Off Broadway. As she performed and gave her all to the part, her own talk show saw an increase in viewers.
Behar appeared in films including Cookie and This Is My Life as well as HBO specials like Manhattan Mystery. In 1997, she became a frequent panelist on The View, which gave her the huge break she needed. To become a permanent co-host, she had to be renowned for introducing new comedians to the audience.
