Ellen Burstyn was born on 7 December 1932, in Detroit-US, to Correine Marie and John Austin Gillooly. Burstyn’s ancestors include Irish, French, Dutch, and a bit Canadian Indian, according to her. She went to Cass Technical High Institution, a university-preparatory school where students might specialize in a particular subject of study. Burstyn studied fashion illustration as a major.
Burstyn’s Broadway career began in 1957, and in 1967, she entered Lee Strasberg’s The Actors Studio in New York City. For her portrayal in the comedy Same Time, Next Year, she won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play in 1975.
