Life & Career |
Earl was born in the city of Tyler, Texas, on March 29, 1955. Bert “B.C. Campbell” was his father’s name, and Ann Campbell was his mother’s name. His father died when he was 11 years old, and he had eleven more siblings. Earl started playing football when he was in fifth grade, first as a kicker, then as a linebacker in sixth grade.
He did this after seeing Dick Butkus play and copying his manner. His mother, Ann, tried to persuade him not to play football in high school, but he refused. He was widely recruited after high school, and he restricted his options to Houston, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Baylor.
Finally, he relocated to Texas and enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin. From 1974 through 1977, he was a member of the Texas Longhorns collegiate football team.
He appeared in 11 games as a freshman, rushing for 928 yards and six touchdowns on 162 attempts. He was also given the Heisman Memorial Trophy for being the best collegiate athlete, and he was the first player from the University of Texas to win it. He was also the inaugural recipient of the Davey O’Brien Memorial Trophy, which was given to the Southwest Conference’s most outstanding player.
Earl was drafted in the first round of the 1978 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He was signed for a six-year contract for $1.4 million. He was the quarterback at the time. He was traded to the New Orleans Saints in 1985 after being selected as an exchange in the first-round selection. New Orleans was taken aback when he was swapped for Richard Johnson.
